Lewis Hamilton apologises after Ferrari strategy outburst

Lewis Hamilton has apologised for his criticism of Ferrari during and after the Dutch Grand Prix, accepting responsibility for comments made in the heat of the race. The seven-time world champion said his frustration had overshadowed the standards he expects of himself, while reaffirming his commitment to the team and its work.

Hamilton finished fourth at Zandvoort, after believing Ferrari’s decisions had cost him a chance of reaching the podium. On lap 43, he was running behind Charles Leclerc when Ferrari called the Monegasque into the pits. Leclerc stayed out for another lap, while Hamilton was instructed to hold position as he pursued George Russell in third. Hamilton was later frustrated again by the timing of a virtual safety car.

The result weakened Hamilton’s position in the championship. Kimi Antonelli remains the leader, while Hamilton and Russell are now level on 183 points, almost 60 behind the Italian. Hamilton had hoped the race could produce a podium, but instead lost further ground to Antonelli and was caught by his Mercedes compatriot in the standings.

In an Instagram post on Monday, Hamilton said he had reviewed his radio and television comments and recognised that they did not show his best side. He said his competitive commitment to Ferrari had fuelled the reaction, and indicated that the strategic issues would be addressed privately with the team.
