Ligue 1: Luis Enrique sends a warning to Dembélé after Rennes

Paris Saint-Germain opened their Ligue 1 campaign with a difficult night at Roazhon Park, where they trailed Rennes 2-0 at half-time. Sebastian Szymanski put the hosts ahead in the ninth minute before Esteban Lepaul doubled the advantage before the interval. The response from Luis Enrique was immediate and direct: Ousmane Dembélé and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia did not return for the second half.

The decision carried particular weight because Dembélé is the reigning Ballon d’Or winner, while Kvaratskhelia is one of the leading figures in the Paris squad after winning the Champions League’s best-player award. Their status did not protect them from a substitution after a first half in which PSG struggled to create danger and fell behind twice.

Every player, he added, had to show in every day, training session and match that he was ready. His warning was aimed at Dembélé and Kvaratskhelia, but also at the wider squad.

The coach’s message was that no player has permanent credit. He said it was easy to rest on previous achievements and slip away from the required level, while insisting that his teams must keep trying to win and leave their comfort zone. The timing made the point particularly clear: the statement came during the opening Ligue 1 match, when PSG’s status as French champions offered no protection from a poor first half.

Torres’s impact gives the situation a practical dimension as well as a disciplinary one. His two goals made him the most influential substitute on the pitch and placed immediate pressure on Dembélé, especially after the French international’s difficult start to the season. The competition around Kvaratskhelia is less direct for now. Bradley Barcola is expected to leave, while Godts’s first appearance was not entirely convincing, leaving the Georgian with more room to recover.

The match also exposed Luis Enrique’s frustration with events beyond his team’s performance. He criticised the handling of time-wasting by Rennes players, saying referees had discussed stronger measures in meetings but had not always applied them as expected. Referee Dechepy did enforce the new rule when goalkeeper Brice Samba took too long over a restart, awarding PSG a corner, but the decision did not end the coach’s protests.
