Aminata Seck to be released on bail after US detention

Senegalese basketball player Aminata Seck is set to leave ICE custody after nearly two months on a $2,500 bond.

Aminata Seck is set to leave US immigration custody after nearly two months, allowing the Senegalese basketball player to regain her freedom while her administrative case continues. Her release will come on a $2,500 bond, her lawyer Sadiqa Reynolds said.

Seck, 26, was taken into custody by Immigration and Customs Enforcement on August 7 at Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport. She had been travelling with her Kentucky State University team when she was detained. She has since been held at an ICE detention facility.

The case concerns her immigration status and an issue involving the renewal of her student visa. Seck’s detention also raised concerns over access to medical care, as she is dealing with a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament. The injury requires treatment, adding a health dimension to the legal and administrative problems surrounding her detention.

The planned bail release ends her period in custody but does not resolve the visa matter. Seck remains linked to Kentucky State University, where she plays basketball, and will leave detention after close to two months under immigration control.
