Lionel Messi reaches 100 Inter Miami goals with trophy
Lionel Messi scored his 100th Inter Miami goal and helped the club win the Campeones Cup against Cruz Azul.
Lionel Messi has added another trophy to his Inter Miami record after reaching 100 goals for the Florida club. The milestone came in a final against Cruz Azul, giving Miami another major moment with the 39-year-old forward at the centre of it.
Messi scored once and supplied an assist as Inter Miami won the Campeones Cup 2-0 on Wednesday. He headed in from close range in the 24th minute after a pass from Luis Suarez, his former Barcelona team-mate, to reach the century in his 115th appearance for the club in all competitions. In the closing stages, his corner created the second goal for Brazilian midfielder Casemiro in the 81st minute.
The occasion also linked two stages of Messi’s Miami career. Cruz Azul were the opponents when he opened his account for the club with a free-kick in July 2023. This latest result brought Inter Miami the annual meeting between the MLS champion and the winner of Mexico’s league competition, while Messi claimed another honour in his first 100-goal landmark for the team. He had announced his international retirement at the end of August, with his final Argentina appearance scheduled for October 6 in Buenos Aires.
