Lyon signal desire to keep Paulo Fonseca beyond 2027

Lyon have signalled that they want Paulo Fonseca to remain in charge beyond his current contract, which runs until June 2027. Sporting director Matthieu Louis-Jean expressed strong mutual commitment between the club and the Portuguese coach, saying Fonseca also wants to continue the project. The position comes despite recent criticism and uncertainty around the team’s results.

No renewal talks have started, and there is no financial agreement in place. Louis-Jean does not yet know Fonseca’s salary expectations, although he is considering an initial discussion before Christmas. The proposed extension is therefore still an intention rather than a negotiated deal. The director even joked that the coach might ask for only €1,000 a month.

Lyon’s support for Fonseca comes during a difficult period. The club was eliminated by Fenerbahce in the Champions League play-offs, lost the third-place position it held last season and is undergoing major economic restructuring. The European exit added to the financial pressure, forcing Lyon to reassess its sales targets and budget balance. The club remains ambitious on the sporting front, while its limited financial room means any new agreement must fit its constraints. Louis-Jean has also referred to plans involving Lyon’s Brazilian community, reinforcing the sense that the club sees Fonseca as part of a longer-term project.
