Mamadou Loum Ndiaye returns to Sporting after 298 days
The Senegal midfielder has rejoined Sporting Gijón’s squad after surgery and nearly 10 months out with a left Achilles injury.
Mamadou Loum Ndiaye is back with Sporting Gijón’s professional group after nearly 10 months sidelined, giving coach Nicolás Larcamón another midfield option. The Senegal international has completed a long rehabilitation programme following the injury that brought his previous season to an early end.
Ndiaye suffered serious damage to his left Achilles tendon on 29 October 2025 while preparing for Sporting’s Copa del Rey meeting with Caudal Deportivo. He underwent surgery and then spent 298 days, or nine months and 24 days, away from the team. His return had not yet taken place when Sporting faced Sabadell in the first league round, but he has now been selected for the squad facing Burgos.
The inclusion marks the midfielder’s official return to Sporting’s professional setup and the next stage of his recovery. After weeks of preparation and positive progress, Ndiaye can begin working towards regular match involvement. His immediate task is to regain playing time gradually before seeking to re-establish himself in the centre of the Sporting midfield.
Ndiaye is also a member of Senegal’s 2023 Africa Cup of Nations-winning side. His absence since last October kept him away from Sporting’s competitive plans, while his return gives the club an experienced player as the season develops. The Burgos squad selection does not by itself indicate that he is ready for a full match, but it confirms that he has moved beyond the longest phase of his rehabilitation and is again available to the coaching staff.
