Mika Hakkinen remembers Michael Schumacher battles

The former McLaren champion recalls confronting Schumacher over risky wheel-to-wheel moves at 330 km/h.

Mika Hakkinen has revisited the intense rivalry that defined his Formula One battles with Michael Schumacher, recalling the occasions when the German’s aggressive approach went beyond what he considered acceptable. The Finnish driver said Schumacher was a formidable competitor but changed noticeably when he was racing.

Hakkinen, speaking to TV Monaco, described several moments at roughly 330 km/h when Schumacher forced him towards the outside of the track. He regarded those moves as unfair and dangerous, not only for the two drivers but for everyone involved in the race. The former McLaren driver said the risks were impossible to ignore at such speed.

The two-time world champion also recalled confronting Schumacher directly about the manoeuvres. Hakkinen said Schumacher defended them as a normal part of competition, while Hakkinen insisted that such tactics could not be justified at those speeds. Their exchanges reflected the intensity of a rivalry in which neither driver was willing to give ground.

Hakkinen won the 1998 and 1999 world titles before finishing behind Schumacher in 2000, becoming the German’s principal rival during that period. Despite their hard racing, he remembered Schumacher as an exceptional person away from the circuit and retained positive memories of their contests. The respect was mutual: Schumacher had previously described Hakkinen as the best driver he faced.
