Novak Djokovic revisits 20-year US Open bond with Monfils
Djokovic begins his 20th US Open as he recalls his first appearance, a five-set meeting with Gael Monfils.
Novak Djokovic’s 20th appearance at the US Open will also mark two decades since his first match at the tournament, when he faced Gael Monfils. The connection between the Serbian and Frenchman has become a symbol of a generation that remains active at the highest level.
Djokovic, 39, starts this year’s campaign on Sunday against Mariano Navone. He is pursuing a record 25th Grand Slam title and returning to the tournament where he lifted the trophy in 2011, 2015, 2018 and 2023. His opening match will be played over the best-of-five-set format, a test he regards as different from preparation on the practice court.
The Serbian said the early rounds have become especially demanding in recent years, while also pointing to longevity as a central objective of his career. He and Monfils are still competing 20 years after their first US Open meeting, continuing to represent the older generation on the major stage.
Djokovic also indicated that his documentary project could be expanded. Work is under way on future material, potentially through media formats, a book or a series. He said he wants to explore more subjects and share additional parts of his experience with the public.
