Olympique Marseille face wage barrier in transfer clear-out

Olympique Marseille’s transfer plans are being held back by the cost of its squad. The club wants to refresh the team and reduce its wage bill, but moving established or unwanted players has become difficult because their contracts exceed what many potential buyers can afford.

Consultant Kevin Diaz said the problem is structural rather than a failure by Marseille’s recruitment staff or sporting directors. Some players are earning between €300,000 and €500,000, sharply limiting the number of clubs able to match their salaries. That gap leaves Marseille exposed when buyers refuse to take on the same financial commitment.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is a clear example. The midfielder remains protected by his contract and is expected to weigh his preferred destination, personal circumstances and current income before agreeing to leave. He did not want to join Newcastle, while a move to Italy would become difficult if the club involved could not offer comparable pay. Marseille therefore cannot rely only on its contacts or negotiators to complete a sale. Unless a player accepts a lower salary or finds a club willing to meet his demands, the French side remains unable to free space in its squad and wage structure.
