Ousmane Dembélé's France starting place questioned after Italy
A disappointing display in France's 1-1 draw with Italy has reopened the debate over Ousmane Dembélé's role.
Ousmane Dembélé’s position as a France starter is under fresh scrutiny after a difficult performance against Italy, with television analysts divided over whether he should retain his place for the next international. The Paris Saint-Germain forward wore the captain’s armband in Kylian Mbappé’s absence but failed to provide the attacking leadership expected of him.
France drew 1-1 with Italy at the Stade de France. Dembélé missed a major opportunity early in the second half when he was presented with a clear chance after a shot from Désiré Doué had been deflected. His overall performance was also criticised for wasteful execution and poor decisions in possession.
Daniel Riolo argued that the version of Dembélé seen at PSG does not appear in the national team and that France have other attacking options. Emmanuel Petit took a different view, saying a player of Dembélé’s quality should adapt across positions, while warning that Doué’s improving output is putting his place at risk.
Samuel Umtiti defended keeping Dembélé in the central-forward role he occupies at PSG. He argued that the France attack must provide the same support he receives in Paris, adding that Dembélé can contribute through his movement, link play and ability to operate with his back to goal. The debate comes before France’s meeting with Belgium.
