Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang revives his Deportivo spell

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has made an immediate impact at Deportivo, rebuilding his momentum after his difficult departure from Marseille. The 37-year-old Gabon international has found the net in each of the promoted club’s first two Liga matches, giving his new team a reliable attacking outlet at the start of its return to the top flight.

Deportivo drew 1-1 away to Malaga on Monday at La Rosaleda, with Aubameyang providing their goal. He created the opening himself by taking the ball past goalkeeper Alfonso Herrero before finishing with his right foot. That followed his goal against Elche in the previous match, extending his scoring run across the opening two fixtures.

The strong start comes after Aubameyang’s Marseille spell ended in May. He was punished and removed from the first-team group after being involved in a disruptive gathering at the club’s training base during a preparation camp. Marseille still held his contract until June 2027, but the club’s need to reduce its wage bill led to his departure.

Deportivo completed the move on July 17 by paying the €1.5 million release clause. Aubameyang had been attracted by the club’s project and its return to Liga football, a competition he had known earlier in his career. His consecutive goals now give that new chapter a productive opening.
