Raoul Shungu backs DR Congo U20 after Senegal defeat
DR Congo U20 coach Raoul Shungu remains satisfied with his players and promises changes for Sunday's second friendly.
Raoul Shungu has defended the performance of DR Congo’s U20 side after their narrow friendly defeat by Senegal, saying the team’s preparation was affected by its long journey. The coach remains satisfied with his players and expects the second meeting to offer a stronger test before both teams continue preparing for the UFOA-A U20 competition.
Senegal won the opening match 2-1 on Thursday at Dakar’s Leopold Sedar Senghor Stadium. DR Congo left home on Tuesday at 8 p.m. and arrived in Senegal at the same time on Wednesday, spending about a full day travelling. The Congolese delegation had asked for the fixture to be moved back by one day, but the request was not accepted because the match fell within a FIFA date.
Shungu also acknowledged the quality of Senegal’s young team, describing the hosts as well prepared and talented. He plans to field a different DR Congo lineup in the return fixture, scheduled for Sunday, October 4, at the same stadium. The coach said his side would approach the game with clear ambition while hoping it is played in the friendly spirit he associates with the longstanding relationship between the two countries. He expects the second encounter to provide another useful opportunity for both coaching staffs to assess their players.
