Real Betis mocks Mbappe brothers after Lille win

Real Betis used Ethan Mbappe’s red card to mock the brothers after recent setbacks against the Spanish club.

Real Betis has turned two difficult nights for the Mbappe brothers into a social-media joke. After beating Lille in the Champions League, the Andalusian club posted an ironic image featuring actor Willem Dafoe and linked it to the phrase “Real Betis Balompie”, aimed at both Ethan and Kylian Mbappe.

Betis won 3-2 in Lille, where Ethan Mbappe was sent off in the 56th minute. The 19-year-old midfielder received a direct red card after a VAR review of his challenge on Natan. Betis used the dismissal as the latest reference point in its teasing message about the Mbappe family.

The post followed another setback involving Kylian Mbappe only days earlier. Real Madrid lost 1-0 at Betis in Andalusia, with the French forward seeing his penalty saved by goalkeeper Alvaro Valles. The sequence gave Betis two consecutive victories over teams involving the brothers, each accompanied by a notable Mbappe moment.

The club’s message therefore focused less on the Lille result itself than on the contrast between its recent success and the brothers’ difficulties against Betis. Ethan’s sending-off and Kylian’s missed penalty provided the material for the club’s public jibe.
