Senegal sport gains UN backing as transformation pillar
The United Nations has identified sport, youth and national cohesion as key drivers of Senegal’s socio-economic transformation.
Sport has received fresh backing as part of Senegal’s wider socio-economic transformation, with the United Nations placing it alongside youth and national cohesion among the country’s central development pillars. The position was expressed in Dakar during a United Nations-organised sporting activity linked to International Youth Day.
Around 300 people joined a walking event held on Saturday under the theme “Youth pathways and the Sustainable Development Goals”. The theme was presented as a reflection of the expectations placed on young people. International Youth Day is observed each year on 12 August.
The event also highlighted sport’s broader role beyond competition. Physical activity was associated with health and wellbeing, while Senegal’s sports authorities described sport as a tool for education, better health and stronger national cohesion. The emphasis gives sport a place in the country’s development agenda alongside its social and economic objectives.
The message comes as Senegal prepares to host the Youth Olympic Games from 31 October to 13 November. The director general of sports at the Ministry of Youth and Sports said the country was ready to stage the event, adding an international sporting dimension to the focus on youth and national unity.
