Stade Brestois reissues Eric Roy cap for cancer care

Stade Brestois 29 is reviving the “King Eric” cap associated with former coach Eric Roy, with proceeds directed to cancer care in Brest. The initiative honours Roy while supporting INNOVEO, the endowment fund of Brest University Hospital, particularly its oncology department.

Roy died from cancer at 58 on June 17, around two and a half months after the end of the 2025-26 Ligue 1 season. The cap became closely linked to his time on the Brest bench after he began wearing it during chemotherapy, helping him conceal hair loss and keep his illness private from his players and the wider public.

Brest begin the 2026 Ligue 1 campaign in sixth place with one point from one match, following a 2-2 draw and a goal difference of 2-2. Their recent run also includes defeats by Al Wakrah, Strasbourg and Paris Saint-Germain, alongside draws with Concarneau and Angers. They next travel to face Le Havre on September 5.

The reissue also recognises the hospital oncology staff who cared for Roy. The club has framed the cap as both a tribute to a coach whose image became inseparable from it and a way to contribute to the service supporting cancer patients.
