Tadej Pogacar faces fears of another Vuelta attack

Tadej Pogacar’s lead at the Vuelta a España remains intact, but the cancellation of Monday’s stage has heightened concern that he could try to extend it immediately. The race now turns to a demanding fourth stage around Andorra, with the Slovenian already in the red jersey and holding a sizeable advantage over his main rivals.

The third stage was stopped after a severe hailstorm struck the peloton on the ascent to Font-Romeu. Riders had to dismount and seek shelter before organisers abandoned the day’s racing. Conditions are expected to improve for Tuesday, although the route will provide Pogacar with several opportunities to attack.

Alexis Renard expects the riders to resume despite the disruption and warned that a very difficult stage awaits. Former rider Jacky Durand believes Pogacar could attack from the start, while also allowing for a more controlled approach if his team wants to preserve energy ahead of the world championships. Even then, the final two climbs could give him the opening to increase his margin.

David Moncoutié also expects Pogacar to make a major move, putting the likelihood of another standout performance at 70 percent. He said a long-range attack, potentially around 50 kilometres from the finish, would not be surprising after Pogacar’s similar move at Gavarnie on the Tour de France. Waiting until the finale would be the less expected option.
