Thierry Henry keeps coaching door open but resists quick return

Thierry Henry says coaching remains a passion but weighs stability, family and his football role before returning.

Thierry Henry has no immediate intention of abandoning coaching, but his latest comments suggest he will not return to a bench at any cost. The former France international said the work still appeals to him and that he plans to reactivate his coaching qualifications. He is currently football director at On and also works as a consultant for FOX Sports and CBS Sports.

Henry has been without a team since leading France’s under-23 side to the silver medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Before that assignment, he coached Monaco from 2018 to 2019, CF Montréal from 2019 to 2021 and served as Belgium’s assistant between 2022 and 2023. His coaching career therefore remains active, although he has not managed a side since the summer of 2024.

The instability surrounding modern coaching jobs is central to his hesitation. Henry pointed to Nottingham Forest having gone through three or four coaches and questioned the value of leaving a long-term football project for a position that could disappear after four weeks. He also said any decision must account for his family, children and the mental pressure carried by coaches.

Henry dismissed suggestions that he could follow Zinédine Zidane into the France job. Zidane has begun his tenure with victories in Turkey and Belgium, both by 1-0, but Henry made clear that the national team role belongs to his former teammate.
