Thomas Ramos explains his choice to join Racing 92

Racing 92’s recruitment of Thomas Ramos is intended to give the club a stronger leadership presence next season. The France international will leave Stade Toulousain and is expected to move from full-back to fly-half in the Paris region.

Ramos described the decision as difficult, while Racing president Jacky Lorenzetti said the move came from a meeting of the player’s ambitions and the club’s needs. Ramos had explained what he wanted, and Racing was looking for a leader capable of influencing the group. The heavy defeat at Bordeaux over the weekend further convinced Lorenzetti that the squad needed players with greater character.

The club does not expect Ramos to solve its problems alone. Lorenzetti has made clear that the 6 Nations winner will be treated as one member of the team rather than a player responsible for delivering the Top 14 by himself. His contribution, in Racing’s view, will depend on the response of the rest of the squad.

Ramos will therefore arrive as a reinforcement and a potential reference point, but not as a substitute for collective improvement. Lorenzetti believes his impact will be limited if his new teammates do not raise their own level alongside him.
