Toulouse face UBB test after La Rochelle defeat

Toulouse must respond quickly after opening their Top 14 campaign with defeat at La Rochelle. The result has increased the importance of Sunday’s meeting with Bordeaux-Bègles, another leading side and a two-time European champion, as the reigning four-time French champions seek to avoid an early setback becoming a wider concern.

La Rochelle led 24-10 at half-time, and Toulouse were eventually beaten by a late score after failing to manage the second period effectively. Jean Bouilhou said the coaching staff accepted responsibility, pointing to poor adjustments, an ineffective bench and a failure to prepare properly for a crucial La Rochelle lineout in Toulouse’s 22-metre area. The staff also believed Toulouse could have taken at least two points from the match.

Alexandre Roumat has described the UBB fixture as an important measure of Toulouse’s level, while stressing that one result will not define the whole season. The challenge is followed by an away game at Vannes and a rematch with Montpellier, opponents Toulouse faced in last season’s championship final. A difficult opening sequence leaves little room for another poor performance.

The pressure also comes amid sanctions imposed on Toulouse during the summer and announced departures involving Thomas Ramos, François Cros and Manny Meafou. Bouilhou said those developments had not visibly affected the squad, but the club now needs a strong display against UBB to establish its position early in the campaign.
