Vinicius Junior gets Mourinho backing amid Madrid slump

Jose Mourinho is continuing to back Vinicius Junior as a central figure at Real Madrid, despite the winger’s declining influence and growing criticism in Madrid. The coach’s immediate priority is to restore the movements and confidence that previously allowed the Brazilian to change matches, rather than treat him as a separate disciplinary or sporting case.

Vinicius was withdrawn in the second half of Real Madrid’s derby at the Metropolitano, with Yan Diomande introduced as the team tried to respond after falling behind and going down to 10 men. The Brazilian had little impact during his 56 minutes: he created no chances, sent two attempts off target and completed eight passes from 22 involvements.

The performance has intensified concerns about a wider drop in output. Vinicius has been described as less sharp in his running, less threatening on the flank and still not sufficiently involved defensively. Mourinho nevertheless believes the player’s previous level remains decisive for Real Madrid’s ambitions, while also recognising that his accumulated credit will not last indefinitely.

Competition is becoming more tangible, with Mourinho identifying Diomande as an option in Vinicius’s position. The Brazilian’s contract runs until June 2032, and he now joins Brazil for matches against Australia and India. That international period gives him time away from immediate club pressure before he returns to a Real Madrid side where his place is backed, but no longer appears untouchable.
