Vuelta 2026 freezes overall times before final finish

The Vuelta’s overall standings will be protected before the finish of Sunday’s final stage, following concerns over the route around Granada. Times for the individual general classification will be taken 9.8 kilometres from the line, after a decision involving the race organisers and UCI commissaires.

Enric Mas begins the stage in control of the race for Movistar, holding a 2-minute 15-second advantage over Primoz Roglic and 2:44 over Félix Gall. The Spanish leader is therefore positioned to retain the red jersey, while Clément Berthet must protect eighth place. His margin over Cristian Rodriguez is only 18 seconds. Wout van Aert is also close to securing the points classification.

The stage does not finish in Madrid. Instead, the peloton will complete a circuit near Granada featuring four climbs of the Alhambra, each measuring 2.1 kilometres at an average gradient of 6.6 percent. The time freeze will come before the final lap, limiting the effect of the closing section on the general classification after riders had raised concerns about the circuit’s danger.

Finish-line time bonuses will not be added to the overall standings. Points for the points classification will still be awarded, leaving the stage with a separate contest for the green jersey even after the general classification times have been secured.
