Yaya Touré makes UEFA Champions League history with Slovan Bratislava
Yaya Touré has led Slovan Bratislava into the UEFA Champions League league phase, becoming the first African coach to reach that stage after a 3-2 aggregate win.
Yaya Touré has made history in the UEFA Champions League after leading Slovan Bratislava into the competition’s league phase. The Slovak club secured its place with a 2-1 victory over NK Celje in the second leg of their play-off tie, completing a 3-2 aggregate success. The result gives Touré a landmark achievement at the beginning of his coaching career.
The decisive match was played at Celje, where Slovan Bratislava overturned the challenge of the Slovenian side with a narrow win. The victory settled a tie that had been decided over two matches and confirmed the club’s passage to European football’s main competition. The 3-2 aggregate score also reflected the tight margin between the teams across the two legs.
Touré’s achievement is significant because he becomes the first African coach to lead a club into the UEFA Champions League league phase. He reached that milestone in his first role as a head coach. The former Ivory Coast international only took charge of Slovan Bratislava during the summer, with one account placing his arrival roughly a month before the qualification breakthrough.
The route to the league phase began before the play-off against Celje. Slovan Bratislava eliminated FC Iberia 1999 of Georgia in an earlier qualifying round, then overcame Sweden’s Mjallby AIF. Those victories placed the club in the final stage of qualifying, where the aggregate win over Celje completed its journey into the Champions League.
For Touré, the achievement adds a new chapter to a career that had already made him one of Africa’s best-known footballers. The Ivorian midfielder represented both Manchester City and Barcelona during his playing days and was a major figure for the Ivory Coast national team. His move into coaching has now produced a European milestone before he has completed his first season in charge of a club.
The qualification also gives Slovan Bratislava a place among the teams competing in the league phase of the UEFA Champions League. It is the club’s collective success as well as Touré’s personal landmark, built through three successive qualifying challenges. The final step came against Celje, but the achievement rests on the club’s ability to progress past opponents from Georgia, Sweden and Slovenia.
The next task for Touré will be to manage Slovan Bratislava in the league phase and continue the club’s campaign at the highest level of European competition. The qualification has already established his place in African football history, but the club’s European programme now provides the setting for the former midfielder’s first experience of Champions League football as a coach.
Touré’s progression from celebrated player to head coach has therefore moved quickly. He has gone from taking charge during the summer to guiding Slovan Bratislava through the qualifying rounds and into the league phase. The 2-1 win at Celje delivered the immediate result, while the 3-2 aggregate score confirmed the wider achievement: an African coach has reached the UEFA Champions League league phase for the first time.
