Zidane’s France Debut Drives Record Nations League Audience on TF1
Zinédine Zidane’s first match as France coach drew 6.82 million viewers on TF1, as the 1-0 win over Turkey delivered a five-year Nations League record.
Zinédine Zidane’s first match as France coach produced a major television audience as well as a narrow victory. The Bleus defeated Turkey 1-0 in Izmit on Friday, with 6.82 million viewers watching the match on TF1, according to Médiamétrie. The figure gave the broadcaster a 37.7% share of the market and made the game the most-watched Nations League match in five years.
The result was France’s first under the former Real Madrid coach, who succeeded Didier Deschamps in charge of the national team. Zidane’s appointment had already generated sustained attention from supporters and the media. His arrival on the France bench now appears to have translated directly into television interest, with the match attracting a larger audience than recent qualification and preparation games that struggled to reach five million viewers.
The broadcast was clearly ahead of its prime-time competition. France 3’s television film Les Secrets du Finistère drew 2.55 million viewers, while the vigil for Pope Leo XIV at the Stade de France on France 2 attracted 2.43 million. TF1 therefore finished well in front of both programmes, in a night that placed Zidane’s debut at the centre of the French television schedule.
The broadcaster reported an average audience of 6.8 million and a peak of 7.7 million during the match. It also described the performance as a record on several key audience groups for a Nations League broadcast. TF1 recorded a 48% share among women responsible for household purchases under 50, 61% among men aged 25 to 49, and 71% among viewers aged 15 to 24.
Those figures show that the attraction extended beyond France’s established football audience. The strongest result came among 15-to-24-year-olds, while the figures for both younger and older adult groups also reached levels TF1 described as historic for the competition. Zidane’s public profile, built during his playing career and reinforced by his success in club management, was therefore a central part of the night’s television appeal.
The broadcast momentum continued after the final whistle. TF1’s post-match programme attracted an average of 1.6 million viewers, its best performance among the relevant target groups since 2024. That audience was smaller than the match itself but still gave the channel a substantial follow-on programme and extended coverage of Zidane’s first evening in charge.
There was also an unusual detail before the football began. Zidane and his staff reached the pitch a few seconds late as La Marseillaise started to play. They arrived while the anthem was already under way and hurried into position alongside the players. The brief delay marked an otherwise highly watched first appearance in the technical area and became one of the distinctive images of his debut.
France’s 1-0 win means Zidane begins his tenure with a victory, although the scoreline underlines how closely contested the match was. The television figures give the Nations League a significant audience boost in France and show the scale of interest surrounding the national team’s change in leadership. They also establish a high benchmark for the next fixture in this sequence.
The next appointment is Belgium against France on Monday at 20:45, again on TF1. It will be Zidane’s second match as national-team coach and another opportunity for the broadcaster to measure the response to his arrival. The match in Izmit has already confirmed that his first steps with the Bleus have been followed not only on the pitch, but by a mass television audience.
