Zinedine Zidane and Emmanuel Petit’s old rupture revisited
Zidane’s fallout with former France team-mate Emmanuel Petit began with criticism and later drew a public regret.
Zinedine Zidane’s relationship with former France team-mate Emmanuel Petit was badly damaged after Petit criticised the Ballon d’Or winner’s level of commitment outside football. The disagreement remains an unusual break with a former colleague from a career in which Zidane has generally received strong support from his team-mates.
Petit raised the issue in his autobiography, arguing that Zidane’s influence and public standing demanded greater involvement. He acknowledged that Zidane carried out some charitable work but believed the former playmaker should use his considerable platform more openly.
Zidane responded sharply after confronting Petit in person. He rejected the idea of being criticised publicly by someone who had not raised the issue directly with him and said he no longer wanted to see his former team-mate. He also questioned Petit’s own public presence, saying the criticism was difficult to accept after their previous meetings.
Petit later softened his position. In 2021, he said he regretted writing those remarks and would not repeat them, placing the unity and protection of the France team’s group above his personal view. The dispute stands out because Zidane, whose playing career ended almost two decades ago, remains one of France’s most popular sports figures and is rarely challenged so directly by former team-mates.
