Bixente Lizarazu savours France's late Belgium comeback

Bixente Lizarazu celebrated France’s dramatic turnaround against Belgium, then praised the substitutions that changed the match.

Bixente Lizarazu’s joy became one of the defining images of France’s comeback against Belgium, with the former international celebrating the turnaround throughout his commentary for TF1. The 1998 world champion reacted especially strongly when Désiré Doué brought France level and again when Michael Olise completed the late revival.

France won 4-1 after trailing Belgium, scoring all four of their goals after the 77th minute. The team had struggled to create danger for much of the match, but a decisive late spell transformed the contest. Olise’s final goal came after another effective contribution from Doué.

Working alongside Grégoire Margotton, Lizarazu celebrated each French goal before joining the post-match programme at the edge of the pitch. He highlighted the influence of the changes made during the game, pointing to the introductions of Olise, Rayan Cherki and Lucas Da Cunha, followed later by Doué.

Lizarazu described the match as the kind of unpredictable, high-scoring encounter he enjoys, with France overturning the situation in emphatic fashion. The broadcast also included a moment of shared understanding between Lizarazu and his close friend Zinédine Zidane, who is in charge of the national team.
