Bruno Fernandes inspires Manchester United's first win

Bruno Fernandes turned a difficult start into a statement performance, giving Manchester United their first victory of the season. The attacking midfielder’s display came days after he was named the 2025-2026 player of the season by his fellow professionals, making it a decisive week for the Portugal international.

Manchester United defeated Ipswich Town 5-2 after losing their opening match 2-0 at Hull City. Ipswich went ahead through Leif Davis in the 29th minute, but Fernandes levelled before half-time. He then restored United’s lead from the penalty spot in the 61st minute and completed his hat-trick seven minutes later. Jacob Greaves’ own goal had put United ahead in between those two Fernandes strikes.

Fernandes added an assist to his three goals by setting up Bryan Mbeumo in the 82nd minute. Chuba Akpom scored for Ipswich in added time, but the late goal did not alter the outcome. The result gives Manchester United an immediate response to their opening defeat and places Fernandes at the centre of their early-season recovery. The club’s next league test is at Everton, before a Champions League meeting with Sabah Baku and the derby against Manchester City on 13 October.
