FC Barcelona move top after defeating Rayo Vallecano

Barcelona kept their perfect Liga start and returned to first place with a convincing win over Rayo Vallecano.

FC Barcelona have moved back to the top of LaLiga after extending their perfect start to the season with a third consecutive victory. The result puts them ahead of Real Madrid and underlines their early challenge for first place, while Rayo Vallecano remain in 13th with one point from their opening two league matches.

Rayo took an early lead through Sergio Camello in the 12th minute, but Barcelona responded quickly. Raphinha equalised seven minutes later before Lamine Yamal put the hosts ahead in the 21st minute. Barcelona controlled the first half and finished it with 12 shots to Rayo’s one, although Jules Kounde’s effort was ruled out for offside.

An own goal by Florian Lejeune increased Barcelona’s advantage shortly after the interval. Camello scored again from a corner to reduce the deficit, but Raphinha restored the two-goal margin with his second of the night. Yamal completed the scoring in the 90th minute, giving Barcelona a 5-2 win.

The defeat adds to a difficult run for Rayo, who have lost their last three listed matches after earlier victories over Alaves and Villarreal. They will next face Racing Santander on September 5, while Barcelona carry their strong opening momentum forward at the top of the league.
