Krépin Diatta joins Watford after Monaco departure
The Senegal midfielder has chosen Championship club Watford after leaving Monaco, signing a one-year deal with an option.
Krépin Diatta has chosen Watford as his next club after leaving AS Monaco, taking an unexpected route into England’s second tier. The 27-year-old Senegalese right midfielder has agreed a one-season contract with the option of an additional year, ending a five-and-a-half-year spell with Monaco.
Diatta explained that discussions with Watford’s representatives clarified the club’s project for him. He considers the Hornets an important club with a recent Premier League past and believes their level should be higher than the Championship. That ambition was central to his decision to accept the move despite interest in a return to a more prominent European environment.
The challenge is immediate: Watford are 20th in the Championship after eight matches. Diatta therefore joins a side currently positioned near the bottom of the division, while the club’s stated direction is to recover the standing it held in England’s top flight not long ago. His arrival adds experience from Monaco and Club Brugge, where he played before moving to France for €16.70 million in 2020. He had joined Brugge from Sarpsborg 08 after beginning his European career in Norway.
