Lens explains Toppmöller exit and backs Cahuzac

Lens has defended its decision to end Dino Toppmöller’s tenure after only three months, saying the move followed a prolonged assessment of the coaching setup rather than a reaction to the team’s last four matches. Sporting director Jean-Louis Leca and general manager Benjamin Parrot said the club acted to protect its future after the German coach’s approach failed to align with the organisation around him.

Parrot said divisions had emerged between the French and foreign members of the staff before the Trophée des champions. Meetings and other attempts to improve cooperation did not resolve the problem, and the lack of cohesion began to affect the team. The club therefore decided to reshape the staff, a step Toppmöller did not accept. Lens still praised his character and work, while Leca described him as an excellent person and coach.

Leca said the club’s concerns had developed over the three months since Toppmöller replaced Pierre Sage, despite the short competitive sample. He rejected the idea that the change had been prepared in advance or driven by a personal agenda, stressing that the decision was taken in response to developments within the group.

Yannick Cahuzac will take charge against Monaco. Lens considers the former staff member a natural choice, having identified him as a possible first-team coach when he joined the club. Leca added that the club’s leadership must now direct its full support towards Cahuzac and his staff.
