Ligue 1 2026: Le Mans hold Lens after dramatic 2-2 comeback

Le Mans and Lens drew 2-2 in a demanding Ligue 1 contest that changed direction twice. The promoted side built a two-goal lead before half-time, but Lens responded quickly after the interval to avoid a third straight defeat. The visitors had travelled to Le Mans three days after a win in Prague and were still recovering from their Champions League effort.

Le Mans controlled the opening stages with greater intensity and sharper vertical passing. Lens struggled to maintain possession and were repeatedly forced back towards their own penalty area. Risser kept the score level with a fine save from Lamine Calodat, who had cut inside and struck a powerful effort towards the far corner. The pressure eventually produced the opening goal in the 32nd minute.

A cross was initially repelled by Risser, but Calodat kept the move alive by disguising a shot and sending the ball towards the far post. Mafouta headed against the crossbar, and Ahmed Bourabaa reacted first to finish the rebound. The goal reflected Le Mans' sustained pressure and gave the hosts the platform to attack the space behind Lens' defensive line.

The second goal arrived just before the break. Bourabaa released Calodat into the inside channel, and the left-sided player controlled the pass before sliding the ball beneath Risser. Le Mans went into half-time 2-0 ahead, while Lens had offered little threat from open play. Florian Thauvin had been forced to drop deeper to help organise the attack, with the visitors lacking a consistent presence in front of him.

Lens changed four players at the interval and immediately found a route back into the game. Thauvin created the first goal with a curling cross from the right. Edouard's attempted flick disrupted the defenders, allowing Abdoulaye Sima to attack the far post and head into the top corner despite Haftout getting a touch. The goal reduced the deficit in added time at the end of the first half and gave Lens momentum for the restart.

The equaliser came in the 51st minute. Mesloub sent Aguilar down the right, and the full-back delivered a low, dipping cross into the danger area. Filip Ivanovic, who had started Lens' match in Prague, moved ahead of the Le Mans defence and directed a precise header under the bar. The comeback was complete within six minutes of the second-half restart, but the match remained open and physically demanding.

Haftout then kept Le Mans level with an outstanding save from Thauvin after the Lens captain had been found by Edouard. The goalkeeper anticipated the shot and dived to his right to stop what appeared to be a clear equaliser before it arrived. He also dealt with a later effort from Thauvin after the forward had created room around Yohou. At the other end, Calodat continued to threaten until fatigue began to limit his influence.

The closing phase brought further danger for both teams. A penalty was awarded after Sidibé was judged to have pushed Thauvin Hazard, but the decision was changed to a free-kick after a VAR review. The home crowd also saw the crossbar save Le Mans when Hazard curled a set piece over the wall. Sidibé suffered an apparent shoulder problem after an accidental contact with a team-mate, while Le Mans' defence increasingly focused on protecting the central areas.

Todibo became central to Lens' resistance late in the match. He blocked Traoré's shot after the forward had combined with Diallo, stopped a promising exchange between Mafouta and Gueye, and produced a well-timed tackle when the pair appeared ready to create a third goal. Le Mans also had a late attack ruled out for offside. Mesloub added energy after coming on, while the 16-year-old son of former Lens player Mesloub was described as changing the feel of the game for the visitors.

The league record currently places Le Mans seventh, with one point from one match and a 2-2 goal record. Its recent form also includes wins over Nantes, Versailles and Bastia, a defeat by La Roche VF and a 1-1 draw with Reims. The point against Lens therefore adds to a sequence showing both attacking promise and the ability to compete against stronger opposition, even after surrendering a two-goal advantage.

For Lens, the draw ended the immediate threat of another defeat but exposed the cost of a demanding schedule and a slow start. For Le Mans, it was a missed opportunity to claim a major victory but also evidence that the side can unsettle an established Ligue 1 opponent.
