Lucas Da Cunha's costly error gives Italy an equaliser
Lucas Da Cunha’s failed control helped Italy equalise, while France coach Zidane defended the midfielder.
Lucas Da Cunha’s mistake became the defining moment of France’s match against Italy, four days after the Como midfielder had made a promising international debut against Belgium. His error allowed Italy to level the game and overshadowed an otherwise disciplined performance.
Adrien Rabiot sent the ball towards Da Cunha after the midfielder had moved towards him and indicated that he wanted the pass. The delivery was difficult and carried risk, but Da Cunha failed to control it. Alessandro Bastoni read the situation, came in behind him and won possession. Da Cunha immediately held his head in frustration as Italy took advantage of the turnover.
The 23-year-old had otherwise kept his game simple, helping France circulate possession across the pitch during a first half in which the team’s control produced little penetration. He completed 96 per cent of his passes and showed quality on long deliveries, although his play lacked the forward thrust France needed. The high completion rate also reflected how rarely he attempted ambitious passes.
Zinedine Zidane did not withdraw Da Cunha in response to the error. The midfielder stayed on until he was replaced after Dayot Upamecano’s red card late in the match. Zidane also made clear that he would judge Da Cunha on his overall display rather than condemn him for one loss of possession in a dangerous area, an important show of support for a player still gaining international experience.
