Malick Fofana tipped to stay at Lyon despite Roma interest
Lyon now expects to keep Malick Fofana, with Roma interest stalled and Paulo Fonseca backing the winger’s future.
Lyon is increasingly confident of keeping Malick Fofana beyond the end of the transfer window, despite interest from Roma. Coach Paulo Fonseca has indicated that the Belgian winger remains central to the club’s plans for the 2026-27 season.
Fofana, 21, is valued for his ability to drive forward and provide penetration in Lyon’s attack. His previous season was disrupted by surgery and subsequent pain, but Fonseca says the player has now recovered physically and mentally. The winger is also motivated to remain with the club.
Roma’s interest has not yet produced an agreement, with the two clubs still far apart in their positions. Lyon has already turned down offers because it believes Fofana’s value is high and wants to retain a player it considers important. Fonseca said the club is not worried about a possible sale, while making clear that any suitor would need to meet Lyon’s demands.
The situation marks a significant shift from the possibility of Fofana leaving before the window closes. Unless Roma or another interested club changes the financial terms, Lyon expects the young winger to continue with the team.
