Remco Evenepoel considering Giro return for 2027 season

Remco Evenepoel could return to the Giro d’Italia in 2027, a move that would shape Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe’s strategy for the Grand Tours. The Belgian is considering starting the Italian race on May 8, although his programme has not been confirmed.

The Giro would offer Evenepoel another chance to complete the race after two difficult appearances. He abandoned his debut in 2021 following a serious crash. In 2023, he wore the pink jersey after the ninth stage but withdrew after testing positive for Covid-19.

The 2027 plan follows a season in which Evenepoel finished second in the Tour de France, his only Grand Tour of the year. His team had paired him with Florian Lipowitz as co-leaders, but Lipowitz’s campaign ended after a crash during the Evian-les-Bains time trial. Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe now intends to continue using two general-classification leaders in its Grand Tour line-ups.

Team manager Ralph Denk has not decided whether Evenepoel will ride the Giro, the Tour or the Vuelta. The route of each race will be an important factor in that choice. The squad also has Jai Hindley, Giulio Pellizzari and Aleksandr Vlasov, giving it several options to build leadership combinations across all three races.
