Roberto Mancini faces uncertainty in FIGC election case

Roberto Mancini’s position as Italy coach could be put at risk if Giovanni Malagò’s election as FIGC president is overturned. Mancini was appointed during Malagò’s leadership, and decisions made by the federation’s current administration could also be challenged if the election is ruled invalid.

Malagò won the FIGC presidency on June 22, but his eligibility is now being examined because he did not hold a federal licence when he stood for election. Sports prosecutor general Ugo Taucer considers a valid licence a requirement for candidates. The Italian Olympic Committee, CONI, must decide whether that issue amounts to a serious breach of sporting regulations.

No decision has yet been taken, and Italy’s next international window is expected to proceed as planned. Mancini is still due to announce his first squad on Friday, although his appointment could be among the measures affected if Malagò’s election is annulled.

CONI is reviewing Taucer’s conclusions alongside the arguments from the FIGC and Malagò before moving forward. A vote and further legal steps are expected in the coming weeks. If serious violations are confirmed, the federation could be placed under a commissioner, leaving Mancini’s future among the first major decisions for any new leadership.
