Valentin Royer and Quentin Halys exit Hangzhou

France’s presence in the Hangzhou quarter-finals has been reduced to Hugo Gaston and Kyrian Jacquet after Valentin Royer and Quentin Halys were eliminated. Both French players lost to Russian opponents, ending their campaigns at the ATP 250 event.

Royer, who had opened with a victory over Adam Walton, was beaten by top seed Daniil Medvedev 7-6 (8-6), 6-3 in one hour and 49 minutes. The Frenchman stayed close in the opening set and created five break-point opportunities against the world No. 6, but Medvedev held firm before securing the decisive break at 4-3 in the second. Medvedev will meet Coleman Wong, ranked 108th, in the last eight.

Halys, the tournament’s fourth seed and ranked 49th in the world, fell to Roman Safiullin 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 after two hours and 18 minutes. Making his first appearance of the tournament, Halys took the opening set by breaking at 5-5. Safiullin, ranked 102nd, responded with a break in the second set and then took Halys’s serve at the start of the decider, maintaining that advantage to the finish.

Safiullin’s quarter-final opponent will be China’s Yunchaokete Bu, ranked 111th.
