Zinédine Zidane’s France Debut Sets UEFA Nations League TV Record
Zinédine Zidane’s first match as France coach drew 6.8 million viewers on TF1, as the 1-0 win over Turkey delivered a Nations League audience record.
Zinédine Zidane’s first match as France coach produced a 1-0 victory over Turkey and a major television audience for TF1. The Nations League meeting in Izmit marked the former France captain’s first appearance on the national-team bench after succeeding Didier Deschamps. The result was narrow, but the interest surrounding Zidane’s return to the French setup was substantial, with the match becoming the clear television event of the evening.
TF1 recorded an average audience of about 6.8 million viewers for the game. The broadcaster reported a peak of 7.7 million, while the match registered a 37.7 per cent audience share according to the available viewing figures. TF1 said the fixture was its best audience for a Nations League match in five years, underlining the scale of the attention generated by Zidane’s appointment.
The audience figures also showed strong interest across several target groups. TF1 recorded a 48 per cent share among women responsible for household purchases under the age of 50, a 61 per cent share among men aged 25 to 49, and a 71 per cent share among viewers aged 15 to 24. The broadcaster described those figures as historic records for its Nations League coverage among those audiences.
The match led the evening schedule by a wide margin. France 3’s repeat broadcast of Les Secrets du Finistère attracted 2.55 million viewers, while France 2’s La grande veillée des jeunes avec le pape Léon XIV drew 2.43 million. The France-Turkey match therefore reached almost three times the audience of the papal programme and more than doubled the figure for the France 3 drama.
Interest continued after the final whistle. TF1’s post-match programme attracted an average of 1.6 million viewers, its strongest performance among the cited target groups since 2024. The figures gave the broadcaster a second sign of the Zidane effect on the same night: not only did the match dominate prime time, but the programme that followed also benefited from the attention around the coach’s first game.
Zidane’s debut also contained a small but notable moment before kick-off. As La Marseillaise began in Izmit, he and his staff had not yet reached their places on the pitch. They arrived a few seconds later and hurried into position while the anthem was already being played. It was an unusual opening detail for a first match in the role, before France went on to secure the 1-0 win.
The television response places Zidane at the centre of the France team’s public profile from the start of his tenure. The audience was higher than the figures recorded by recent qualifying and preparation matches, which had struggled to reach five million viewers. That comparison is especially relevant because France’s 2026 World Cup matches are being shown by M6 and beIN Sports, leaving TF1 to measure the impact of Zidane’s arrival through other international fixtures.
France’s next appointment is against Belgium on Monday at 20:45, again on TF1. The match will provide the next televised chapter of Zidane’s tenure after the victory in Turkey. For the competition, the opening result gives France a winning start in the Nations League, while the audience figures show that the change on the bench has immediately become one of the central stories surrounding the national team.
