Klay Thompson joins Miami as DeMar DeRozan moves to Denver

Miami adds Klay Thompson while Denver brings in DeMar DeRozan ahead of the 2026-27 NBA season.

Miami and Denver have added experienced NBA scorers as they reshape their teams for the 2026-27 season. Klay Thompson will join the Heat after Dallas released him from his contract, while DeMar DeRozan has agreed to spend the season with the Nuggets.\n\nThompson, 36, played two seasons in Dallas after an illustrious spell with Golden State alongside Stephen Curry and Draymond Green. He is fourth on the NBA’s all-time three-point scoring list and averaged 11.7 points, 2.1 rebounds and 1.4 assists across 69 games last season. His arrival gives Miami a veteran presence alongside Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo.\n\nThat combination offers the Heat a route to improve on last season’s 10th-place finish in the Eastern Conference. Thompson is also a four-time NBA champion, and Miami regards his contribution as extending beyond his shooting.\n\nDenver has added DeRozan on a one-year, $3.9 million deal. The 37-year-old forward will join Nikola Jokic, Jamal Murray and Aaron Gordon after averaging 18.4 points, 4.1 assists and 2.9 rebounds in 77 games for Sacramento last season. The Kings finished second-last in the Western Conference, but DeRozan enters Denver as the league’s 16th-highest regular-season scorer, with 26,711 points.
