Marseille lose Gouiri as injury list worsens

Marseille’s squad problems have deepened with the injury to Amine Gouiri, leaving coach Bruno Genesio with even fewer attacking options. The club began the season with a restricted squad after making no summer signings, and the latest setback has struck its leading scorer this campaign.

Gouiri was injured while playing for Algeria against Zambia in a 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier on Friday. He left the match in the 18th minute, with a quadriceps problem in his left thigh suspected. Algeria went on to win 3-1, but Marseille face uncertainty over when their four-goal forward can return.

The club are also without Derek Cornelius, whose serious hip injury is expected to keep him out until 2027. The Canada international has served as cover for Morocco defender Nayef Aguerd. Geoffrey Kondogbia remains sidelined with a thigh problem, further reducing options in midfield.

There is some relief with Tochukwu Nnadi nearing a return to group training during the international break, which ends after the first week of October. The Nigerian midfielder has been absent since injuring a knee against Monaco on August 30, when Marseille won 2-0 in the second round of Ligue 1.
